Anglo-Ceylon Sewing Box, 19th C., Coromandel Wood
Sewing box from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), likely the Galle district, with fitted ivory inserts and marquetry, in two layers with a removable upper tray, adorned on the inner lid with an ivory elephant motif insert surrounded by blue velvet liner. The box is veneered throughout the exterior with coromandel and has a serpentine profile. There is a minor damage to one of the corners.
